March 12, 2006 was the last straw. 'Family Guy' began with Peter Griffin as a contestant on Wheel of Fortune. He won, and then was asked to choose prizes from the showcase. Keep in mind, Wheel of Fortune hasn’t had a prize showcase for about 15 years, but no matter, one of the prizes Peter chose was a ceramic Dalmatian for 600 dollars. Which is an old Louie Anderson joke, word for word. 'Family Guy' didn’t even bother to make it a ceramic leopard or elephant, they stole Andersons joke word for word. Ive noticed for a long time that 'Family Guy' steals other people material, but this was finally enough. And so this blog began, to finally document every instance of Seth McFarland stealing jokes, and finally ending his completely undeserved reputation as some kind of genius.

You're an idiot. Everything copies from something else.

Yeah, and the image of Death, that was a completely original depiction that was shown on South Park. I had never seen that portrayal of Death before it was on South Park. I can't believe all of the places I've seen it since then. I even saw a guy with a tattoo of Death, and I knew he stole the idea from South Park. Bunch of frauds.

Yeah, he copies from other events and jokes....but I'm pretty sure it's on purpose, not simply because he's stealing content. For example, in one episode Stewie goes "Yeah, I know what it's like to be cool..." and some scene begins with him saying the lyrics to Rocketman. It was a direct copy of this video:

I think he recreates jokes, more than steals them (possibly to see if anyone catches on and remembers things). Yeah, it gets annoying and sometimes makes you question his true comedic genius, but that's just his style I guess.

That's part of the joke you dipshit. The whole show is supposed to envoke American pop culture nostalgia. Even if he's stealing other bits he's still creating an intelligent and witty show. So I guess we can call every single black comedian in the past 20 years a hack now because they all steal from Richard Pryor. Get a clue.

OH and all you idiots who commented saying that he pays homage or recreates jokes rather than stealing them are only focusing on the jokes that are recreated or that are homages. The other 85% of the show is flat out theivery. though I do agree that the South Park "death" thing is a little far fetched, that is after all the classic depiction of death. The Simpsons used it way before South Park did, and people in the 1300's used it during the black plaque way before the Simpsons did, so...

Note to all Family Guy apollogists, while ocasionally "paying hommage" to another gag from pop culture, Family Guy does in fact lift jokes all the time. Are you honestly saying that you think McFarlin was thinking "Oh everyone will that fryers club roast and a have a good laugh about it." And even if he did, using the phrase verbatum is not paying hommage. Look to Areested Development if you wanted to see pieces of pop culture to be payed hommage to (Buster Keeton, Star Wars Kid, Peanuts etc.)

Overall, Family Guy is a show that thinks its smart while in reality recycles jokes from bad commedians and pandors to the dumbest common denominator.

The Friars Club Roast? I've never heard about that specific roast, let alone seen it, but I've heard that phrase a lot. It's a pop culture phrase. Arrested Development was a good show, but it thought it was smart, which it was, but that doomed it from the start. FG doesn't pretend to be smart, it never has. It's entertaining, it's also a form of entertainment, odd how that works.

2:28 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed, FG has never pretended to be smart, it has plenty of different levels of humor from straight fart jokes to witty, more clever material, to say its recycling lame jokes is just dumb because theyve obviously made the show quite popular. Whether he steals jokes from older material or does homages is not the point, the show is funny because he brings all these different styles of humor together into one cartoon. If you have to cry about hearing that he stole some louie anderson joke or god forbid drew a character similar to snoopy then just go fuck yourselves and dont watch.

Brian: "I just don't think that your the right woman for me."

OK to the subject of Family Guy stealing Death from South Park, even the touching people and them dying thing, that is the most retarded thing I've ever heard. South Park didn't make that up, THATS WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF DEATH. And on the actual blog, some of the examples were absolutely retarded. Saying they stole the 'hotdog down the hallway' from Whoopie Goldberg, thats just a funny joke holy shit I guarantee you Whoopie didn't make that up either. Every example was retarded, except the Stewie one, that smart baby looks stolen.

and what kind of asshole are you to know Louie Anderson's material any way? that's fucken creepy dude.

what makes FG reference to the dalmation funny is not that it is original, it's that, like much of the humor on the show, it references something that was once ubiquitous and is now obscure.

BTW- South Park was funny in it's day but *rarely* so now. and comparing the two?- you get 10 jokes a minute on FG where there's maybe 1 on SP.

Oddly enough, we merely have to look at South Park to see their concerns over "ripping off" plots like the Death bit:

Cartman: Dude, the Simpsons have done everything already. Who cares?
Stan: Yeah, and they've been on the air for like, thirteen years. Of course they've done everything.
Mr. Garrison: Every idea's been done, Butters, even before the Simpsons.
Chef:Yeah. In fact, that episode was a rip-off of a Twilight Zone episode.

The issue is not doing something that hasn't "already been done" somewhere, its doing something original. When Family Guy actually does this (Lois' lost brother was a fairly cohesive plot, even though the "long lost sibling" plot has been done before). Its not about finding what other shows have done which might mimic other other shows: its about backing up your Family Guy support with what they've done that's original.

You're probably too young to have seen Wheel of Fortune in its glory days back when the contestants had to spend the money they won on junk from the prize showcase stage, so you're probably not aware of the ceramic dog that was the bane of many a Wheel of Fortune contestants' existance.

The contestants had to spend every nickel they had, and almost everyone had to buy the dog because it was the cheapest thing on the stage.

It was a joke on Wheel, and Pat Sajak and the contestants would joke about the stupid thing. Louie Anderson didn't invent the dog, and certainly wasn't the first guy to poke fun regarding it.

hmm. right on time...south park wins a peabody. bitch.

BTW: 10 jokes a minute is precisely the problem. there's something called comic tension, which takes some amount of craft to sustain. 10 jokes a minute speaks to an acute insecurity in the the writer's own abilities, and next to no confidence in their ADD riddled audience capacity to hang on for a bigger payoff. Although...kudos for having characters puke or roll around in pain for minutes at a time. "Oh my god..he's still saying 'owww'!! ha ha ha. that's cra-a-a-zy"

Wow - your comments need to be moderated. I can't believe people react this viciously when they find out that something they think is funny and original really isn't. Wait, yes I can.

Like others have said, the Death example isn't that concrete a case for stealing other people's material, but I don't believe how bad the Jimmy Corrigan/Stewie thing is. Is there a lawsuit pending over that? Because there should be. There's riffing on someone else's humor, and then there's theivery. The Stewie example is pretty blatant theivery.

People who say nothing is original anymore or that Family Guy is a cultural homage should try going out and creating some art themselves. And when someone rips their work off and gets rich off it, I wonder how they'll feel about originality, creativity and "homage" then.

Why does everyone who seems to love the Family Guy with a fanatical righteousness begin their(anonymous) posts with something like this..."You're a fuckin faggot asshole, everything steals from something else, fuck you moron."? I suppose that each time one of these bright lights (who seem to be proud of the fact that pop culture merely exists, and that they are aware of it, WOW ASTOUNDING!) makes a comment they are making an 'hommage' to each other. Either that, or they're just repeating the same bannal, immature b.s. that is apparently the height of wit and ridiculously entertaining. Isn't it weird how the Family Guy's defenders are in fact, guilty of the same shit as the show itself? What came first, the poorly written show, or the slack-jawed, loud-mouthed adherent? I suppose its a vicious cycle. Good work dude on starting the blog, FG is pretty much total bullshit. And for all you 15-19 year old fanatics (if you've managed to read this far without an aneurysm), check out Pinky and the Brain, the Simpsons (that old show), Looney Tunes, the Flintstones, South Park, King of the Hill, and last but unsurpassed only by the Simpsons, the legendary Duckman.

The WB replayed the "Simpson's did it" Southpark episode tonight and I think it pretty much sums this whole copying thing up. Everyone copies everyone. If Family guy stole a joke, chances are the person Family Guy stole it from was a thief themselves. Southpark is upset because the jokes on Family Guy are interchangeable and have nothing to do with the story, line so it pisses them off to be compared to such simple humor.

I agree with the above statement. In fact, references to other shows, movies, comics, etc. only make the show that much better, because episodes become more enjoyable with each viewing. For example, I didn't know the ceramic dalmation was a reference until I read this blog. Now that I know that was a joke, I'll find that episode even funnier next time I watch it. I think Matt Stone and Trey Parker have the right to their opinions about Seth McFarlane, but to anyone on this blog who thinks he isn't a comic genius, I challenge you to create a TV show that becomes as popular as Family Guy. Even if you steal shit from other shows like you claim SM does you won't succeed, so shut up already.

Anytime Wheel of Fortune came up...or gameshows in general...I made the joke akin to " I'll take the Dalmation...and the rest on a gift certificate".
And every single time I made that joke, EVERYONE I told it to Knew what I was talking about.
Its part of Pop Culture...and many different people can come up with the same observations. Since I first made the joke when I was 7 years old in 1978...maybe Louie Armstrong AND Seth McFarlane should be paying me royalies.

and for the record...just retelling a joke doesn't make it funny...its the timeing and the delivery...and that McFarlane has in spades.

(My apologies, in advance, for the LONG post).

So many of you have missed the point. Yes, FG has numerous random, non-sequitur jokes mixed into the story-lines, and yes, SP is often (but not always) a more pointed, focused social satire. Both shows have borrowed, if not stolen, from others aplenty. SO WHAT??? FG basically swings for the fences with dozens upon dozens of jokes an episode, maybe half of which are very funny. Their primary objective, quite simply, is to be goddamned funny and irreverent, and on occasion they aim a little higher as anyone who has seen the FCC censorship episode (“PTV”) can attest. I’m sure the FG writers are highly intelligent folks, so I sincerely doubt that have set out to be socially important but have unwittingly missed their target. No, I think they achieve exactly what they set out to do, which is to elicit belly laughs with a random assault of jokes ranging from the lowest to the highest brow. FG is basically clever, low-brow humor, and yes, it CAN be both, and that’s where the criticism by Trey & Matt is off-base. Sure, there are plenty of dick/fart/boob/poop jokes and an arsenal of random pop-culture references in cutaways, but they're usually (I said *usually*) quite clever. And even when they're not so clever, they're hysterical (think about Peter's 12 second, 4 note fart at the end of "The King is Dead"). But, I can think of some great episodes from seasons 2 & 3 that were very focused & cohesive where a number of the jokes, including the cutaways, were integral to the store-line. For example, remember Joe Swanson’s cutting edge law-enforcement van that handcuffs and arrests Peter, but cuffs, stick-whips and then plants a gun (!) on Cleveland because he's a “minority suspect.” Or, how about "Senator, you may have killed her when you stuffed all those dollar bills down her throat. You may have killed when you hit her with the stool. I don't know, I'm not a doctor. But I do know what didn't kill her...cigarettes." My friends, that is just plain clever social satire on questionable law enforcement tactics and the pro-cigarette lobby. It’s also funny as hell.

We can debate the quality of those jokes, but I'm sure anyone who has endured an insufferable episode of “Yes Dear” or “Dharma & Greg” understands that making people laugh requires a tremendous amount of talent. For any one of us to sit upon our comedy pedestal and judge anyone who laughs at something we deem unfunny is just plain arrogant. There are legions of devout FG fans (as there are SP fans) who worship each minute of every episode, and true success in comedy is very simple to gauge – if people laugh AND keep coming back for more, it’s successful. That’s it. To draw an analogy, I don’t happen to care for Madonna’s (or Kiss’ or AC/DC’s or WHATEVER; you get my point) music, but who I am to conclude 40 million paying fans are less music-savvy than I? No, I just have to accept that each of those artists must have something special in order to appeal to so many fans, even if I can’t see it myself.

Finally, need I remind all of us SP fans how many people that have never seen South Park (or Beavis & Butthead before it) think it is a poorly written show about foul mouthed kids with no redeeming entertainment value whatsoever? Look, WE all know better and understand that people think that way because they’ve never bothered to understand and appreciate the show, but shouldn't that just make us more tolerant of FG and it’s fans? (To clarify one more point, FG fans are not just 15 to 19 year old boys. I'm in my mid-30s, just like Seth & his writers, and I’m often amazed at how much the jokes feel like they’re narrowly targeted at my age group).

To conclude with words in the spirit of Stan & Kyle, “I learned something today. Family Guy may be loose, unfocused, rabid, referential, plagiaristic and haphazard, but it’s also very, very funny. And even though it doesn’t always suit my tastes, that doesn’t mean it isn’t great in its own way. It just means it’s different, and different is good.”

I've watched a total of about 3 episodes worth of Family Guy, and think it sucks. All of the washed-up hacks I know rant and rave about it being so hilarious, yet it seems to me like another Hollywood production line, shock-value, dumpster hopeful. Some more fodder for idiotic, drunken banter to make a night at the local bar a little "more interesting" than the 700,000 others. Plus, it always makes stupid people feel smart and witty when they "get" the "sarcasm" in any sitution. It's interesting to see that this guy rips shit off of other people so much. The whole Jimmy Corrigan thing is just too uncanny to call a coincidence. In fact, I'd like to represent the copyright infringement case on that one. That's just my opinion, and I really could give a shit less, but it's good to see the internet is being put to good use, i.e. exposing bullshit phonies. Keep up the good work.

I actually feel dumber for reading this blog.

1. Learn to spell his name right for God's sake. It's MacFarlane you fool.

2. How the hell can you hold up such a tired and played out show such as South Park as the zenith of comedy. They have around five jokes that they did way back at the start of the series and now rely simply on controversy and shock value, neither of which they achieve any more.

3. Stone and Parker are the worst self publicists in the world and are only happy when deriding someone elses work.

4. Somebody out there must like Family Guy. How many other series can you name that have been brought back from cancellation due to fan support (other than Star Trek)

5. Try creating something yourself instead of wasting your time bringing down people who are obviously more talented and creative than you appear to be.

If they had changed it from a Dalmatian, you still would have bitched about the similarity to the Louie Anderson joke.

The humor of Family Guy isn't the theft of previous material, it's the nostalgic celebration of pop culture. When you find the similarity to Louie's joke, you're supposed to remember it and laugh, both at the old joke and at the way it was used in the modern gag.

I'm so glad other people have already pointed out what a flaming idiot you are. FG does indeed 'steal' from other shows, but it really IS intentional. Anyway, allow me to move on with my point...
Get a life! You remind of one of those dumb-ass Trekkie fans that goes to a convention so they can ask 7 of 9 some stupid question about the script. If you asked Seth McFarland, Matt and Trey, or Matt Groening to draw a picture of a guy like that, my bet is that it would be a pretty good likeness to YOU. -All seperate versions!!! Would one be copying the others? Or do people just have a common perception of what 'Dork' looks like? My guess is that you breathe with your mouth open, wear tape on your glasses, have a pocket protector, and wear white socks with black slacks. Depending on how young or old you are, you probrably won't (or didn't) kiss a real girl until your late thirties, at least, not without paying one first. You most likely can't get anyone to let you stick it in them at all. Poor fella. My point is, get out and DO SOMETHING! Go hiking. Do some volunteer work. Get a job. All of these things will help you meet some REAL people, IN PERSON! Not just ones you use a keyboard to communicate with... (Or beat off to, whatever). Maybe after you do those things, you'll be more productive and not be so bored you can focus on trivial things like whether Bryan and Snoopi bear a striking resemblance. -After all, aren't Itchy and Scratchy just rip-offs or Tom and Jerry? MORON!

In the cleveland loretta quagmire episode they use the trainor from Rocky but i dont see any or u turds talking about that. OK so u think that South Park was the first show or thing ever to use Death... Please tell me this is a joke ive taken shits with more common sense than this guy. Pick up a copy of a Christmas Carol by Charles DIckens or watch the movie for all those assholes out there and tell me that South Park, Family Guy, and every other tv show or movie that uses "Death" didnt steal it from that movie or book. Both the movie and book were made before South Park and Family Guy

to the person who said FG relies on shock value: you must have NEVER watched an episode of South Park. The whole show is shock value. South Park wouldn't be funny if it didn't do shit like "I made you eat your parents!" or "I can crap out my mouth!" Family Guy relies on the viewer's understanding of the background of the jokes, whereas South park just goes for laughs every time Kenny dies a different way. Don't get me wrong I love both shows, but it seems to me that when one show steals anothers fire, their audience, and their sales, all everyone wants to do is become naysayers and find fault in it instead of applauding its hilarity. Fuck remembering what the hell Whoopi Goldberg said 12 years ago, or the fact that Stewie bears a striking resemblance to an unpublished comic strip character. Remember the movie Baby Geniuses? The idea of smart kids has been used before, and the football shaped head might very well be a coincidence, just like how Brian resembles Snoopy. I don't remember Snoopy talking, do you? It's a fucking coincidence so let it go. Someone has uttered every phrase that you will ever speak at some time before you, whether it was "throwing a hot dog down a hallway" or whatever. Let's see South Park or Simpsons be as clever as to have Fire Trucks attacking deer or Stewie's big fat cranium being squished into a football shape as he jumped too high on the bed and hit the ceiling.

Come back with more than 6 instances (and stretches, at that) in 75 some odd episodes and maybe I'll believe you, but right now you're barking up the wrong tree...O shit! I think I've heard that phrase before! I'm a fraud!

I am Costarican, i've never even been to the US n I get IT! Geez, why don't you stop backyard-wrestling, thinking about your fake war and your moron president, and start reading. Maybe then, just maybe, you'll get one or two jokes.

If you can get FG, you are not gonna make it through one episode of Arrested Development (which I bet was too smart for the government to understand, and, therefore, was canceled).

Hurts to say ,but The Simpsons just lost it; they stopped being funny four seasons ago. And, be realistic, South Park is not THAT smart.

Everyone wants to claim that FG has no originality but fails to recognize the greatest TV character in years, Quagmire. No on like him in any network show. What about Joe the H/C policeman? Snoopy never said a word let alone the quick one-liners like Brian. And if there is some other stupid baby cartoon out there for the last ten years, I've never heard of it because it's creator doesn't have any talent to get it recognized. Stolen or not the ideas are better for having been on FG. South Park and the Simpson's haven't been any good for years and Arrested Development only appealed to failed "artists" like you whiners.

OK... so can anyone come up with a pre-source for the gag which implied that Hitler's genocidal mania arose from a competitive embarrassment in the gym at the hands of a Jewish guy? Or for the notion of the world's looniest dictator having a daytime talk show (and a latent gay attraction to Christian Slater, for that matter)? Or the whole concept behind the "PTV" episode (especially that musical number)?

I think there's a LOT of original, and very humorous, material in "Family Guy" that may be getting ignored in these discussions because it doesn't square with the pre-existing purpose of this blog. I respect that people have differing opinions, and I wish that my fellow FG defenders (and everyone else in this country, for that matter!) would remember this and attempt to be more civil in their disagreement... but I do think there are some critical elements being missed here.

Now, some elements of the show ARE undeniably similar to previous works. But even copyright law -- whose practitioners are known to seize on the *slightest* similarity as a reason to sue -- recognizes that much of the creative enterprise involves the incorporation of previous works and ideas, via specific references or "stock character" types (e.g. Horny Perpetual Bachelor, a/k/a Quagmire). Part of what makes for effective comedy is the ability of others to share in what's going on -- and that will sometimes require the presence of certain aspects that bear at least a basic similarity to something that's "been done before."

All in all, it seems like a lot of fan and anti-fan Websites paint too broadly in their respective admiration or denigration of the matter at hand... and the real question is, what does this accomplish? If you don't care for a show... then allocate your viewing time to something that DOES trip your trigger. (I can't help but point out that this same advice applies to anti-"obscenity" demagogues who target the FG competitors which are applauded on this site... when it comes to media freedom, we all ought to be in this together...)

dude, I can understand hating the show, because it IS absurd, and certainly not brilliant. But at times, when I really don't feel like doing a lot of thinking, it's very entertaining. You can walk in halfway through the episode and you don't need to know what's going on to laugh at most of it. That's what made it so popular. if you miss the first half of south park(even though it's a better show) and turn it on, you're like, "I have no idea what's going on... I don't get it... OH LOOK!! Family guy's on!"*click* "you think that's bad..." "bahahahahahah!!!!" and that's how that works.

From one SOUTH PARK FAN to another... I personally think that you have no idea what you are talking about for the exception that you seem to have some problem with another great and funny cartoon such as family guy. EVERY joke has been used, re-used and even recycled... in other words, south park has stolen many jokes and ideas that have already been used, such as the grim reaper (death. And you know what else seems funny... your forum of negative expression and criticism also seems like it has been used before... I mean, did you STEAL this blog idea from some one else because it does not seem original! I guess what I'm trying to say is that you are a classic douchebag that seems to have no education towards debating or even rational thinking... I'm pretty sure many will agree when I say... Family Guy is a total rip off of The Simpsons. Ive seen entire sequences stolen - plots, characters, and dialogue. Ive been screaming about it for years, and Im so glad others have caught on. FG fans try to write it all off as "coincidental", as if direct plagiarism is the same thing as similarity, or influence. MacRipOff isnt just guilty of "similarities", he's guilty of straight up shamless plagiarism, idea theft, and of being a no-talen-ass-clown too. He was busted red-handed with Jimmy Corrigan, and tried to lie his way out of it. I also hate the way that he seems to think that ruthlessly ragging celebrities for every little thing, makes for good humor. He such an idiot. He's trying to be like The Simpsons, where often celebrities get ragged for something they have actually done, like Tim Allen going to jail for example. But MacFarlane just ragges celebrities for any little reason, like their facial features, and seems to think its funny. Its not funny, its actually kind of cruel. I wish someone would make a cartoon called Seth MacFarlane, about a shameless rip-off hack who gets lucky with a cartoon series. The whole Adam West thing he does - is another direct rip off of The Simpsons, who started the Adam West thing in one episode, and MacFarLane simply stole the whole gag.

I respect your opinion, but at least spell 'Seth McFarlane' correctly. There's an 'e' at the end, not a 'd'. (And allow me to point out, the image of Death being a hooded figure with a scythe was not created for South Park. That has been a classic portrayal of Death in many cultures for centuries. FG may steal many of their gags from other sources, but at least it's done in a way that's entertaining and humorous, which in my opinion is rarely the case with South Park.)

Look, I dont care about spelling here, as long as you get the point - which you do. Furthermore, if mis-spelling his name disrespects MacRipOff in any small way - then thats a good thing. FG fans try to write off his plagiarism as mere coincidence, influence, or similarity. But its far beyond that - in MacRipOff's case, he has flagrantly stolen plot, dialogue, and character sequences from The Simpsons. And, ehat I do not understand is why this guy feels the need to do it anymore. I have atched FG many time, and he has demonstrated an ability to be original, and funny. He doesnt need to rip off other's work anymore - his wrk can stand on its own now. So, why does he do it still then ? Insecurity ? Laziness ? I dunno, but he does still do it - for that there is no excuse. I actually saw something which was downright hilarious - for th efirst tim eever on FG the other night. It was an episode where Meg got hot. At the end, they were on Saturday Night Live, and doing the wrap-up with everybody on stage. Next, Showtime at The Apollo comes on, and you see Brian turning off the TV at 1:00 AM. He turns to "the camera", alone on the couch and says, "what...? Its late ! It has nothing to do with the fact that it's a 'black-comedy show'. Im tired, it's late ! Leave me alone !", Now that, was very funny indeed.

Family Guy is a television show which references popular movies, other TV shows, etc. It's SUPPOSE to reference these things, this is what makes the show funny. Considering Family Guy is still on TV and is doing a great job with ratings, it's quite obvious that it's just you. Everyone else gets it. The show is made to make people laugh, the show does it. It's still on the air which means everyone likes it but you.

I hate to notify you, but popularity with the mainstream, is probably the last indicator, or measuring stick, you'd ever want to use in an effort to qualify, talent. I mean, Vanilla Ice sold millions of records. Bands like "Right Said Fred" enjoyed a very high level of success. Movies like "From Justin to Kelly", were box office hits. Because people like this Family Guy crap, in no way is an indication of talent. The fact that Family Guy enjoys success, means jack squat. The writer is guilty of rank plagiarism.

Jimmy Corrigan...need I say more ?

Yes.. it's pretty hard to use the "paying hommage" defense with the Jimmy Corrigan similarities, seeing that Jimmy is not a widely known cartoon character. Not much of a cultural reference there... but rather, plagarism.

Seth McFarland is a genius. Family Guy's whole existance is based upon poking fun at common symbols of American pop culture. Matt and Trey are bitter because Family Guy is gaining popularity to the point where South Park has become obsolete. They should realize that Family Guy is funnier because McFarland instills intellegence into his comedy, not just blatant crude not so funny jokes. That well has run dry as far as comedy goes.

who calls you a genius? family guy is a pretty funny, and and an intellegant show in my book, and the primary humor is derived from references, some of with nobody gets, the ceramic dolmation is probably a reference. by your logic every single episode of that show "steals" every single joke theyve ever made. death has been portrayed as a corpse or skeleton in a black robe with a scythe for thousands of years and the hot dog down the hallway is an old joke. everyone takes from other peoples ideas and elaborate, or change it around.
i do have to say the stewie thing is pretty funny, but who cares.
you need to find something way better to do, i do however commend you for creating a site that generates more hilaious and intellegant comments than ive ever seen.. well the ones i had the attention span to read. anyway if youve read the whole thing witch im sure you have cause if you have enough time to make this stupid blog im sure youve read every comment, so let me just say that i never say things as cliche or dumb as, i want my time back or get a life but.. well i think you know what im gunna say.

OMG! Did you see that they made a movie that looks so much like Star Wars? Those bastards!

Look retard, as a writer the biggest form of flattery you can give is imitation. It draws light on the original creation, sometimes overshadowed. Those stolen jokes are jokes. Comedians tell jokes told a thousand times before. Just because you have a hard on for South Park, doesn't change anything. You think South Park is brilliant? It's funny, but it's just dick and fart jokes.

Speaking of which, open up a book and you might learn something. Eat a dick.

alright, seriously, Family Guy is a very intelligent and hilarious show. The whole, 'stealing things' bit, is one of the main reasons why the show is so funny. Seth McFarlene steals lines and makes fun of people on PURPOSE because it's so fuckin hilarious. And the whole thing about death, that's the classic 'death' look. Like, on the Nintendo 64 game 'Konker's Bad Fur Day'; the death character on that game looks JUST like death from Family Guy. And same with the show 'The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy,' death is a Grim Reaper, that's WHAT he is, and that's WHAT a Grim Reaper was made to look like. It doesn't really have anything to do with South Park. Family Guy in general is pretty much just a big spoof, and that's why it's original, cause there's no other show out there really that turns lines from other shows and characters and all that, into something so funny, it's perfect how they 'steal' a lot of their stuff. Like the theme song, the whole piano part with Lois if from the beginning of the show All In The Family. so really, Seth McFarlene KNOWS what he's doing, he's not an idiot, he really is a genious, and not a whole lot of people hate Family Guy, which proves Seth makes the show the way he does for a reason. For fuck sakes, if you really hate it, don't watch it, cause it's not like anything you say is gonna change the show.

and yeah, a lot of the jokes and stuff just go way off topic, but it's hilarious because the show is so random, and most of these people (including me) aren't saying Family Guy is the best show in the universe, we're just sticking up and supporting a good show that we just so happen to love. if you don't like it, suck it up, cause i GUARANTEE Family Guy isn't going anywhere anytime soon. :). idiot.

Try to be a productive artist and you'll find out that the probability of not remembering something you took in before and ACCIDENTALLY copying it is greater the longer you work.
Also, have you ever heard of parodies?

Something tells me you may also be one of those Dane Cook hate obsessers.

Try blogging about a good cause instead of perpetuating the imaginary requirement for a south park fan to completely oppose Family Guy. They are both good shows that I watch.

P.S. You are a loser, and not the funny kind. Never create something like this again.

family guy uses a lot of gag reals. Look back into comedy from the 50s. A lot of the same methods are used. There is nothing wrong with taking ideas from other shows and events and making them funny. Family guy rocks.....

family guy is a pop culture reference show.
they opening credits was a take from "all in the family".
its a comedy reference show.
south park is not a reference show. its a show that focuses on current events more than anything.

to say that they steal is just poor knowledge and ignorance.
just because you have heard a joke before doesn't mean they are the ones who reused it.

the only time jokes are stolen and its frowned upon is stand up comedians.

Half of the show is Family Guy making explicit
references to past shows, acts, and people. People who steal jokes, like Carlos Mencia, work pretty hard to disguise the source, whilst Seth does not.

Even if he's stealing other bits he's still creating an intelligent and witty show. So I guess we can call every single black comedian in the past 20 years a hack now because they all steal from Richard Pryor.

Seth MacFarlane stopped being funny years ago. Adult Swim was all it took for him to realize that creativity is expensive and a waste of time.

Unfortunately, by definition this blog is on the Internet. And, as a collective entity, the Internet is basically MacFarlane's catcher.

You are a fucking moron. The fact that you understood the esoteric reference to a Louie Anderson joke is supposed to be what makes it funny for you. Listen to the DVD commentary and they often state that they have used a particular pop-culture reference in order to make a joke that not everyone will understand. The people that do understand it are the exact target market they are aiming at.

Paying hommage??
Some jokes he pays hommage as anybody can tell, others he's just stealing. Funny, by paying hommage on some jokes, he can claim that's what he does with all jokes. To pay hommage, the majority of the audience needs to be familiar with what he's referencing. Star Wars, Avatar, etc. otherwise it's just stealing.
